Day Four

The Rebellious Muse

Day four Spectre of the Brocken: #title

It’s time to retire these worn-out shorts, and throw on a fresh shirt. My house has become a dungeon, and I’ve lost track of time in the outside world for what feels like an eternity.

The muse, that elusive inspiration, tiptoes in whenever she pleases, certainly not at my beck and call.

She’s a rebellious force, following her own whims. My only recourse is to offer her a drink.

The desire is to curl into a ball and have someone else decipher the abstract puzzles and patterns she weaves in my dreams. It is overwhelming. It’s exhausting, and I find myself incapable of unfucking the mysteries.

What’s the point?

The urge to scream builds within, but she silences me—, “Shhhh, put a sock in it” she says. I entertain the thought of hitchhiking an anchor overboard, counting the tides, but she warns against my threats.

“Make a drink and down it fast,” she demands. A spark of defiance, guaranteed to set the sun ablaze when it rises.

“Alright, muse. What now?”

She lays a thick rail and makes me fixate on the clock…3, 2, 1.

“Surprise sweetheart.  You are now on day four, four, four, four.”

Day Four: You can find this story in the collection “Spectre of the Brocken: Halo for the Observer.”
